Toulmin Method
In today's world where we communicate a lot online, the Toulmin method is a helpful way to understand and answer arguments we see on the internet. This method is really useful because online discussions can be very different from the serious debates we have to simple chats on social media.
When you see someone making a point online like in a blog or on social media, the Toulmin method helps you understand it better. The first step is to find the main idea they're talking about. After, check the proof they give like links or stories, to see if it's good and makes sense. There's also the warrant which is the hidden logic that ties their proof to their main idea sometimes this is the part that you have to figure out. Backing is
more stuff that makes their logic stronger. Qualifiers are words like "usually" or "sometimes" that show the point isn't always right. The last thing is the rebuttal, and this is when you think about other sides of the story and how to answer them. This way you can really get what people are saying online and talk about it clearly. An example of an online argument on social media could be someone saying that Texas is a bad state. Someone uses their own experiences like the really hot weather they faced or the culture there wasn't their cup of tea, to explain why they feel that way. They know that just because they felt this way, but it doesn't mean everyone will and this is still their own opinion. They mention some facts about Texas, like how hot it can get, but also say things like "this is just what I saw," to show they know it's just their view. They're ready for others to say that Texas has lots of different places and people, but they stick to saying it's just how they felt based on what they've seen and done. This makes their point clear.
Using the Toulmin method online can be tricky because there's just so much information out there, and sometimes we only see opinions that are similar to ours. It's good to hear different sides of a story, not just what you already believe. This might help you to change your mind if you find out something new that's true. It is good to be friendly with people, even if they don't agree with you. Critical thinking skills are really handy when you're dealing with arguments online. You can figure out if what someone is saying makes sense or if they need to give more proof. They help you decide if the facts they use are good and actually fit their point. They're also useful for understanding the hidden reasons behind their arguments. This helps you come up with good, logical answers to what other people say. This is useful for sorting out all the different kinds of talks and arguments you find on the internet. Being smart with info on the internet is really important. It's all about finding stuff that's actually true, not just made-up or someone's opinion. You gotta know what's real and what's not. And then use the true stuff to help make your points when you're talking or arguing online. This is super helpful because on the internet it's easy to get confused with so much information flying around. Knowing how to pick and use the right info makes your arguments better and more believable.
